Avalon Dragon Boating is in the early stages of development so we
don't have a mission statement just yet. We've decided to recruit our
paddlers and then let them create a mission statement that resonates
with them. So stay tuned. In the meantime though, here are some
details on what we're planning to do over the short-term:
To support each other, improve our physical, emotional and spiritual health, celebrate life and have fun.
To support our friends, families and communities by showing them that there is vibrant active life despite a diagnosis of cancer.
To raise awareness of the existence of breast cancer survivors, the reality that 1 in 8 Atlantic Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, and that these women can be of any age.
To raise awareness so we can contribute to the fight for a cure for breast cancer.
To educate women about lymphedema and help prevent it.
To form a dragon boat racing team consisting of a minimum of 40 paddlers, a steersperson, drummer, captain, manager, coach and begin training by January 2007.
To formalize a strategic plan for the organization by January 2007, which will enable it to secure the financial resources, training supports and equipment needed to compete in the 2007 racing season and to advance its larger health, wellness and community capacity building goals.
To establish channels of communication with local breast cancer support groups, the boat racing community, fitness centers and practitioners and professional health practitioners' associations in order to inform them about the project, its progress and the benefits achieved.
To raise sufficient funds by January 2007 to support the team's first year of operations through grants, corporate sponsorships, membership fees and donations.
To have a dragon boat ready for the water to begin practice June 2007.
