The Avalon Dragon Boating Association consists of breast cancer survivors, their friends, families and interested individuals who share the goal of supporting dragon boating on the Avalon Peninsula, Newfoundland and Labrador. Our association is in the early stages of development so a formal mission statement will come later. Here though, are some of the things we want to achieve:
To support each other, improve our physical, emotional and spiritual health, celebrate life and have fun.
To support our friends, families and communities by showing them that there is vibrant active life despite a diagnosis of cancer.
To raise awareness about the role of exercise and a healthy lifestyle in preventing breast cancer and its recurrence.
To educate breast cancer survivors about the role of exercise and a healthy lifestyle in preventing and managing lymphedema.
To form a dragon boat racing team consisting of a minimum of 40 paddlers, a steersperson, drummer, captain, manager, coach and begin training
To secure the financial resources, training supports and equipment needed to compete in festivals while advancing our larger health, wellness and community capacity building goals.
To establish channels of communication with local breast cancer support groups, fitness centers and professional health practitioners' associations.
To design and build a dragon boat prototype and the fibreglass form needed to build future racing boats.
