In keeping with the maritime traditions of Newfoundland and Labrador, Avalon Dragon Boating is building their own boats from scratch.
In partnership with the Marine Institute of Memorial University and under the guidance of committee member and naval architect, Bruce Whitelaw, the team has taken over the unused industrial arts classroom at MacDonald Drive Junior High School in St. John's and transformed it into a boat yard.
On May 28, 2007 a keel laying ceremony was held at the Avalon Dragon Boating boat yard. In keeping with maritime tradition the keel was signed by Bruce, the master boat builder, as well as all of the team members. Two coins were embedded in the keel for good luck, the team chose to use the special edition breast cancer ribbon quarters issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2006.
Stay tuned to the events section to find out when the boat will be launched.
